Sasori was first seen in his Hiruko stage in episode 2 of Naruto Shippuden. During this time he set a trap for the outside gate of the hidden sand village to trap the guards from escaping once Deidara, his team member, infiltrated the village and captured Gaara. On their way back to the Akatsuki hideout, Kankuro caught up to them and began a battle with Sasori. Little did Kankuro know that Sasori was actually the creator of the puppets he uses himself. Sasori was considered a genius and supplied many of the puppets used by puppet-controlling ninja’s today.
A poisoned-tipped blade struck Kankuro, making him fall into a coma that would eventually kill him in three days. Sasori is seen once more when the Konoha ninja infiltrate the hideout of the Akatsuki as they are extracting the Jinchuriki from Gaara. Sasori defended the cave from Sakura and Chiyo. Chiyo was his grandmother and had not seen Sasori in twenty years.
